How to Choose the Right Filter for Your HVAC System

Air filters keep pollen, pet dander, mold spores, and other airborne pollutants from your home. It can also affect the energy efficiency and performance of your HVAC system as well as your indoor air quality. However, it can be challenging to choose the ideal type for your unit.

An air conditioner installation expert shares tips to help you choose the right air filter for your HVAC system.

Disposable VS Reusable

You’ll need to replace disposable air filters every few months and wash reuseable ones between uses. While washable filters usually cost more, they can be used multiple times. In the long run, you’ll actually spend less with reusable ones since they last longer. They are also a greener option since they help in reducing waste.

Size

Most air conditioners need one-inch-thick filters but some require models of different thicknesses. Make sure that the dimensions of the filter are suitable for the HVAC unit. Keep in mind that not every filter will work with your system. A filter must be of the right size to effectively catch debris, dust, and other contaminants. If you’re unsure about the right filter size, contact the contractor who installed your unit. At, Econoair Heating & Cooling Inc., we’re here to help you with your cooling needs. Our team will respond to you as quickly as possible. We install boiler systems as well as air conditioning and furnace units.

MERV Rating

MERV ratings determine the effectivity of air filters. The higher this number is, the more efficient the product is. Residential air conditioners are usually made to work with air filters that have a MERV rating between 7 and 12. While air filters with a 13 to 16 MERV rating a very effective at catching airborne contaminants, they tend to restrict airflow. It means that you shouldn’t simply choose the filter with the highest MERV rating because they can reduce the efficiency of your system.
