On vs Auto: The Best Setting for HVAC Blowers/Fans

Your HVAC fan’s setting has big implications for your energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and comfort. The fan usually operates differently from your cooling unit. It works independently and circulates throughout your home.

On and Auto are two fan settings.  When the fan is On, it blows air continuously regardless of whether the air conditioner is in cooling mode. However, when the fan is set to Auto, it works dependently of the air conditioner. It only blows air when the air conditioner is actively cooling.

If you’re looking for a professional air conditioner install services expert, Econoair Heating & Cooling Inc is the one you need. Our service technicians are fully licensed and trained to make sure they can perform the current best practices in the industry. If you’re wondering what is the best fan setting, we discuss their pros and cons.

Know More About the On Setting

Pros

  1. There is more even warm and cool air distribution around your home. This helps in reducing indoor hot or cold spots.
  2. It extends the lifespan of your fan because of the reduced stress.
  3. Through a filtration or UV light system, the air inside your home will be cleaner.

Cons

  1. Not all fans have system blowers designed to run continuously. If your fan is not of good quality, there is a chance that it costs you more money on your monthly energy bills.
  2. The air coming out of the vents is cool during winter. The air temperature is similar to space temperature. Therefore, the On mode is not advisable especially during the cold season.
  3. Replace the furnace filter more often.
  4. Ducts in your attic fill with warm air during summer. They blow hot air inside your home, and your HVAC system needs to run more to offset the heat.

Know More About the Auto Setting

Pros

1. It is energy-efficient. The fan only runs when your air conditioner is on and not continuously.

2. When your fan is set to auto, the moisture from cold cooling coils drips and drained outside.

3. You replace the furnace filter regularly. If your fan is on Auto mode, there is a continuous air causing the filter to get dirty. If you have a clogged filter, it needs to use more energy.

Cons

1. There is an uneven distribution of hot and cool air. When the air temperature reaches the thermostat, the fan stops.

2. The blower motor fan wears out fast due to frequent starts and stops of your air conditioner.

To keep your HVAC unit running smoothly for the longest time, choose the right equipment for your ductless install project. We want to address your indoor climate control needs, regardless of the type of space you occupy.

A professional inspection is a need not only for residential owners but for commercial owners as well. Your HVAC units need regular cleaning of filters to avoid clogs and dirty air circulation around your home.
