Signs Your Air Conditioner Needs More Refrigerant

The air conditioner is an essential part of any home interior. With a well-designed and functional AC unit, the occupants of your residential building will feel comfortable and relaxed all throughout the hot summer months. This is why it’s also important to know and understand the fundamentals of such a cooling system in case something goes wrong.

According to an air conditioner installation contractor, all air conditioning systems are pressurized. This means that for them to function properly, they need to be completely sealed at all times. Refrigerant leaks are one of the most serious problems an AC unit can face. The loss of refrigerant, or the AC’s charge, will put your AC’s operation and even its service life at risk.
Here are some signs that will help you determine whether your AC needs more refrigerant:

Increased indoor humidity. Although the AC isn’t exactly a dehumidifying device, it does help to draw moisture content from indoor air as it evaporates cold refrigerant in the coil. If your refrigerant is leaking, this could contribute to the rise of humidity levels indoors.

Less cooling. Any ductless installation expert will attest to the importance of sufficient refrigerant charge. If it drops, your air conditioning system won’t be able to absorb enough heat through the indoor coils, which will lead to a decline of cooling in the house.

Frozen evaporator coil. If the refrigerant charge in the evaporator coil is reduced, it won’t warm up enough, causing the remaining refrigerant to stay cold and moisture to freeze along the coil. If this occurs, remember not to scrape off the ice. Contact an air conditioner expert to see if you have a case of leaking refrigerant.
