What Causes Short-Cycling Problems in Your HVAC System?

There are many advantages to choosing the right size of HVAC unit for your home, even with a ductless installation, For one thing, you’re getting the best value for your money, as you’re not paying more for a unit that’s too big for the space you’re trying to heat or cool. For another, you’re also getting energy efficiency benefits by using just the right amount of power to achieve your heating and cooling needs. But what happens when you forego proper HVAC sizing from the very beginning?

One of the most common–and perhaps the biggest–problems caused by improperly sized heating and air conditioning units is short-cycling. What is short-cycling and why is it a cause for concern? Our HVAC specialists at Econoair Heating & Cooling answer these questions and more below.

Size Does Matter

When you’re doing a cooler or boiler installation with a unit that’s too large, it will only run for a short period of time before it meets the temperature requirements set by your thermostat. This of course causes your HVAC system to switch off. Over time, the unit cycles between the ‘on’ and ‘off’ state too quickly, which is when you begin experiencing what’s known as short-cycling.

Short-Cycling Problems

Short-cycling can put your air conditioning or heating unit under a lot of strain. The damage from the wear and tear alone could set you back hundreds of dollars in repairs. In addition, because most HVAC units consume the most energy when they start up, continuous short-cycling can also have a negative effect on your utility bills.

Resolving Short-Cycling Issues

It’s best to prevent this problem from the start during your air conditioner installation. However, if the problem can’t be helped, there are a few steps you can take. First, check the battery levels and calibration of your thermostat. If that doesn’t work, the next best solution is to have a professional come and fix your short-cycling unit.
