Should You Repair or Replace Your HVAC System?

Your HVAC system is critical in maintaining good indoor air quality and the overall comfort of your home. In order to keep it in the best condition, it’s important to perform well-timed repair and maintenance services. However, there will also come a time when a replacement may be necessary. In this post, AC repair company Econoair Heating & Cooling Inc. reveals when you should repair or replace your HVAC system.

When Does It Make Sense to Repair Your HVAC System?

If your air conditioner has a minor problem like loose ductwork, a clogged drain line or disconnected electrical wiring, it may make more sense to have it repaired by a technician. A repair service is also ideal when the affected unit is still under warranty. Another sign that a repair is the most logical option is if your piece of equipment has had fewer than two repairs in the last decade.

When Should You Replace Your HVAC System?

Old age is the best indication that a replacement is needed. According to a furnace installation specialist, it’s a smart move to swap out an HVAC unit that’s around 10 to 15 years old with a new, more energy-efficient one. Other factors that indicate it’s time to call for a replacement are:

  • You have a system that uses Freon. It’s likely less efficient and usually more expensive to repair.

  • The problems are extensive. If your system frequently encounters problems that involve the compressor, condenser coils or blower motor, a replacement may be due.

  • You’ve had it repaired several times in the past. If your system has had at least three major repairs in recent years, then it’s probably more cost-effective to have it replaced with a brand-new unit.
